Jewish Family lighting Hanukkah Candles in a menorah for the holidaysThe start of a new year. . A brand new beginning. Time to do something new and different. Time to stretch and grow. Perhaps this is the year to introduce culture into your child’s life. Take him to an art gallery, to see the ballet, to enjoy the symphony. Speak about the beauty of the picture, the way the light is depicted, what does the painting make you think of? Why? Go home and Google the artist. Learn something about her past. Does what you learn help you see the painting in a different light. What does the music make you think about? Did you notice how loud the drums were and wasn’t it lovely that the flutes followed? Which instrument did you like most? Is it a string or woodwind instrument? How long does it take to learn to play that instrument? Is that something you would like to learn? Visit a museum and stoke their curiosity. Exposure to the arts broadens our outlook on life. There are children’s museums and exhibits to meet everyone’s interests. Watch for an opportunity and you’ll find discounted days or free entrance for children. The Jewish people have a rich heritage of cultural involvement. Our art, music, writing, theatre, and museums are renowned throughout the world. Let’s embrace cultural opportunities, encouraging our children to grow beyond their day-to-day activities and learning, sparking the light for future innovation and creativity. “

“Art gives us an experience like nothing else can, a chance to connect, understand, and explore perceptions, feelings, and innovative thoughts. Museums provide a space for reflection, experimentation, inspiration, creativity, enjoyment and allow for authentic learning experiences and play. Bringing children to the museum reveals children and adults as being equally active in learning, putting them on equal standing as they create a shared understanding. It’s a democratic process.” —Jamee Yung
