An Inch Wide and a Mile Deep

When Dr. Elizabeth Lyster wrote a book about menopause, she wanted it to be “an inch wide and a mile deep.”  What the gynecologist got was tantamount to the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval when the book, Dr. Liz’s Easy Guide to Menopause: 5 Simple Steps to Balancing Your Hormones and Feeling Like Yourself Again, went to press last year.

Dr. Christiane Northrup, MD, OB/GYN physician, and author of the New York Times bestsellers: Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom, and The Wisdom of Menopause ,  described Lyster’s book as “a highly practical and readable Cliff’s Notes for making decisions about your hormones at midlife. It’s accurate, simple, and illuminating.”  According to Dr. Lyster, “Northrup’s book is the Bible, and mine is the Cliff’s Notes.”

Dr. Lyster, also known as Dr. Liz, is a whole-hearted advocate for women’s health. She gives each patient the time and attention necessary to sort out the best ways to maintain or achieve optimal wellness.  Her book is “your essential guide for understanding what is normal during perimenopause and menopause, what’s not normal, and what to do about it!”  She talks about subjects such as “why women shouldn’t be afraid of hormone replacement therapy.”

According to the website www.tower.com, the book is “a step-by-step guide for women to use to assess your hormone health, and then get the evaluation and treatment you need from the doctor(s) you already have. This book is simple but goes into depth on the issues related to hormone balancing and hormone replacement therapy.”  It “also presents the doctor’s perspective, in order to  help you work effectively with your doctors. While being thorough and based in the latest medical hormone replacement knowledge, this simple guide keeps things light, funny and conversational in tone, as opposed to lecturing, condescending, or confusing. With this guide in hand, you will be able to assess your perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms, and then work effectively with your doctors to get the evaluation and treatment that you need at this time in your life.”

Dr. Lyster, whose gynecology practice is located in Aliso Viejo, provides general women’s health care, as well as specialized consulting in bio-identical hormone therapy.  She also offers a wide variety of outpatient surgical procedures.  The daughter of a pediatrician and a neurologist, she has been in practice for 16 years.

One more thing: Dr. Lyster “loves doing brisses.”  Her website (www.drlizmd.com) describes the Berit Mila ceremony (”Bris“)  – how to prepare, how the ceremony will go, and what to expect afterwards.
