Celebrating Orange County’s Jewish History

Shortly after the Tucker family moved to Santa Ana in the early 1920s, a photographer captured this image of Samuel, 9, and Harold, 4, enjoying a treat on the Balboa Pier; the Balboa Pavilion can be seen in the top right background.  Eighty years later, Lillian Tucker, the boys’ sister, saw the photo being used as part of a local newspaper ad and sent it to the Jewish Historical Society, identifying the boys as her brothers.  Abe and Jennie Tucker and their five children were one of the original families of Temple Beth Sholom and were instrumental in the very early attempts to create a cohesive Jewish community in Orange County.

Dalia Taft is the archivist of the Orange County Jewish Historical Society of Jewish Federation & Family Services Orange County and highlights images from the archives every month.
