Celebrating Orange County’s Jewish History

Jacob Stern and his cousin Joseph Goodman were German Jewish immigrants who arrived in Fullerton in 1889 and soon opened Stern & Goodman Mercantile at Commonwealth and Spadra (now Harbor Boulevard). Jacob later became involved in real estate and was instrumental in the development of Yorba Linda. In 1891 he married Sarah Laventhal, the daughter of a prominent Los Angeles Jewish family, and they went on to have four children. Stern-Goodman Street in Fullerton is named for the cousins, honoring their role in Fullerton’s development, and Stern’s Park in Los Alamitos was dedicated in 1969 to Jacob and Sarah; the plaque at the park reads “This park is given in the memory of Jacob and Sarah Stern, Orange County Pioneers.”
