Celebrating the Holidays

When the owners and staff at Bubbe & Zayde’s Place, a Residential Care Facility for Jewish Seniors, use their motto, “we not only care for the body – we care for the soul,” they think especially of the times that seniors need special love and attention.  One of those times is during the holidays. Bonnie Curkin and her staff make holidays at the five Orange County homes as “haimische” as possible, as do Mettia Cagan and her staff in Los Angeles.

Bubbe & Zayde’s Place accounts for every last detail of observance, from covering the countertops with foil on Passover to preparing special meals for all of the holidays.  Curkin personally engages residents in discussions about how they observed holidays in the past and what the holidays mean to them.

Bubbe & Zayde’s Place adheres to kosher rules.  Shabbat meals are served, and residents are encouraged to participate in the preparation of meals. Jewish programming is central to the activities at Bubbe & Zayde’s Place. Residents participate in religious observances and traditions such as festive holiday meals, Passover celebrations, history and discussion groups, and intergenerational programs.

When holidays arrive, residents in the Santa Ana facility can celebrate them in the on-premises chapel.  In addition, residents of Bubbe & Zayde’s Place have been attending services at nearby Temple Beth Sholom for the past three years.  The Reform congregation, lead by Rabbi Heidi Cohen, has opened its doors to the visitors from Bubbe & Zayde’s Place on the second day of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur afternoon.

A contingent of Temple Beth Sholom members also leads Shabbat and Passover services for Bubbe & Zayde’s Place residents.  The group has developed special lay-led services, complete with songs.

Curkin believes that faith is a vital element to Bubbe & Zayde’s Place. Incorporated into all facets of the home, it allows residents to preserve their identity of Jewish spirituality and culture, she explained.   With a dedicated synagogue on the property, there is a natural setting for community leaders to officiate at Sabbath and holiday services.  Bubbe & Zayde’s Place allows residents the continuity to continue and strengthen their faith.

“We believe that all seniors should be treated with love, respect and dignity.   Your loved ones needs are our priority,” Curkin said.  “We combine Jewish culture and tradition with premiere senior services in a family setting that our residents call home.  As loved ones age, their needs change. Some needs, however, remain constant. A sense of independence is one – a sense of belonging within their own community.”

Curkin added, “Unlike other larger care facilities, residents maintain their own independence. With only six residents per house, your loved ones can keep their own schedule, habits, and routine – while receiving the individual attention and support they require.  We strive to make life at Bubbe & Zayde’s Place no different than life as before.”

Bubbe & Zayde’s Place has been servicing the needs of the elderly Jewish Community in Orange County since 1998. For more information, please call: Bonnie Curkin/Orange County, (714) 928-5030; or Mettia Cagan/Los Angeles, (310) 415-8033.
