The Power of Volunteers: Sharing Israel’s Story with Heart and Pride
In early October, the IAC Orange County proudly took part in the City of Irvine’s Global Village Festival, a vibrant celebration of cultures, communities, and connections. Thousands of visitors gathered to experience the beauty of diversity through music, food, and art. Among them, our Israeli-American community shined brightly, sharing the spirit, innovation, and heart of Israel with warmth, pride, and purpose.
Our booth stood as a joyful corner of Israel – filled with color, conversation, and creativity. Families stopped by to paint, dance, and learn about Israel’s story beyond the headlines. It was more than a display; it was a living bridge between cultures, a place where curiosity turned into understanding, and where community turned into connection.
But what truly made this day so special were the volunteers who made it all happen. From early morning setup to the last goodbyes, our incredible team of community members, adults, teens, and families worked together with endless energy and passion. They answered questions, guided children’s activities, and proudly represented Israel with smiles and open hearts.
For many, like Wendy Bokota, a volunteer, the experience was as eye-opening as it was inspiring: “I was motivated to help create and volunteer at the IAC booth at Global Village because I think it’s so important we show the larger community – not just the Jewish and Israeli community – what Israel is all about: the people, the joy, the music, the art, the food, and the diversity of its culture. I haven’t been to Israel yet, but I felt and understood the joy of the people when the volunteers all danced together, and others looked on and saw the happiness of people celebrating their culture. Even if just one person changed their perception of Israel by seeing the pride and joy of the Israeli people represented at the IAC booth, then it was worth all the time and effort to make it happen.”
Lisa Hertzog, one of our devoted volunteers, shared her reflections: “Volunteering at the Global Village Event was one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had. I spent the entire day at the Israeli booth, surrounded by children from so many backgrounds who stopped to color the word Shalom and create art that celebrated peace and friendship. Watching their curiosity and joy was unforgettable. I had spent weeks preparing the art materials, making sure every page taught something real about Israel – its creativity, innovation, and vibrant culture. It was a powerful reminder of how small moments of learning can build bridges of understanding.Being part of this effort filled me with pride. I truly felt I was contributing to something special, and I can’t wait to volunteer again next year.”
As Tali Bracha, one of our community member supporters, shared: “I was deeply moved visiting the Israeli booth at the Global Village Event. Seeing the dedication and effort that went into creating this space filled me with pride. It reminded me how fortunate I am to be part of this remarkable nation and its people. No matter how others may try to distort our story, the truth remains clear: Israel stands on the right side of history. We are a people of peace, strength, and unity, and when challenged, we rise together. Am Yisrael Chai – forever.”
Their words capture the spirit that defines our community, a mix of pride, resilience, and love for Israel that shines through in every smile, dance, and conversation.
